🚀 [Resources] Add 3D elements to your live-action footage with ease

Hey Reader,

Zach here,

with a fresh collection of news and inspirations from the 3D world.

Today we have a tutorial with an extraordinary technique for VFX shots, a spaceship greebles kitbashing pack, a fun robot video by Polyfjord, and an amazing Ping-Pong boy animation breakdown.

Let’s dive in.

Ian Hubert's amazing "de-lighting" technique for VFX shots

If you love the amazing VFX that Ian Hubert does in Blender for his short movies like Dynamo Dream, you’re probably wondering: "How is that even possible?"

InLightVFX has just published a great video explaining the "de-lighting" technique Ian uses in his productions to remove unnecessary light information from his 3D scenes, recreated from video footage.

It basically lets you add additional 3D elements to your footage and preview them directly in Blender’s 3D viewport in realtime without any compositing.

This sounds quite technical and complicated, but after watching this video you’ll learn it’s quite simple, and by using a free add-on from Ian called "Compify" you can do this even easier.

You can download the "Compify" add-on here.

Spaceship Kitbashing 3D Greebles Pack

Daniel Nees (our CG Boost compositing master) is also a Sci-Fi geek and after working hard on compositing for some Star Wars series (which is part of his day job) he secretly makes some personal Blender projects at home.

One day, a friend of Daniel’s challenged him to make 100 greeble shapes in 100 days. Daniel accepted the challenge with such passion, that instead of creating one 3D model for a couple of minutes each morning, he created a humongous collection of sci-fi greebles in just 2 weeks.

It contains more than 400 unique shapes you can simply throw at your spaceship base shape to make it look sophisticated like the Star Destroyers from Star Wars we all love.

Here’s an example of before and after applying the greebles to Daniel’s spaceship:

Daniel decided to sell this collection so you can give your spaceship designs that next level of details. You can get the full package for just 24$ or a small mini pack with 25 greebles for 1$ (if you want to test it out).

Polyfjord makes a giant Sci-fi Bear Cub Bot

Polyfjord (well known as the creator of the all-time most-watched Blender tutorial on YouTube) has made another fun project and shares his experience in a new 9-minutes long vlog-style video, along with lots of cool ideas and clever techniques.

It is not an actual tutorial, but you can learn a lot by just watching a pro artist like Polyfjord work.

Ping-Pong Boy Animation in Blender

KoalaOK made an amazing stylized animation as an entry for the Pwnisher’s "Kinetic Rush" Challenge (and he won a well-deserved 2nd place).

The animation is mind-blowing in all aspects, including storytelling (with an inspiring message), motion, effects, and the stylized painterly look.

What’s even cooler, Koala shares a breakdown of the process to let us peek behind the scenes and learn how a creative approach to using Blender’s robust tool set can lead to spectacular results like these.

That’s it from me for today. Have a great week and till next time!
